Summary

Excess alcohol consumption is most commonly attributed to liver disease, however, over the past decades, poor dietary habits are becoming a leading risk factor. In particular, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is specifically associated with poor dietary and lifestyle habits. It is estimated that one in three people in the UK and up to one billion people world-wide are affected NAFLD. Early-stages of NAFLD usually cause little harm and few symptoms thus often going unnoticed. As fatty deposits gradually build up within liver cells over time, liver function becomes compromised and, without treatment, irreversible liver damage – cirrhosis – can result.

There are currently no drug treatments available for NAFLD, and only lifestyle and dietary interventions can help reverse it and prevent the damage progressing to cirrhosis.

The webinar explores the role of nutrition and excess body weight in the development and treatment and reversal of NAFLD.
