ORGANISATION

The Alpro Foundation consists of a Secretariat and a Scientific Advisory Board. The Secretariat handles all organizational and administrative tasks and manages the capital of Alpro Foundation.

The Scientific Advisory Board advises the Secretariat in selecting the various applications for grants and awards. The Scientific Advisory Board and the Secretariat meet twice a year (April and November) to discuss and decide about the various applications for funding and on the strategy for the future.

In 2008, four National Scientific Advisory Committees have been set up in Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands and United Kingdom.
The mission of these National Advisory Committees is:

  • to review the thesises for the MSc award and decide on the national winner
  • to advise on the organization and programme of national symposia
  • to advise on funding of research in their country

 

The members of the National Scientific Advisory Committees meet once a year to discuss on the strategy for the future and decide about the various applications for funding in their country.

SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY BOARD

Current members of the Scientific Advisory Board are:

Prof. Dr. Anna Arnoldi, University of Milano, Italy 

Anna Arnoldi is professor of Food chemistry and Functional foods at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Milan. She is authors of more than 130 papers on international journal or books, more than 130 oral communications at congresses, and 5 patents. The main research interests are the following: health promoting components of grain legumes (soybean, lupin, pea), nutraceuticals for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, toxicological and sensory consequences of the thermal treatments of food (Maillard reaction), development of innovative methods for food quality assurance based on mass spectrometry and proteomics. She has been the coordinator of two European research projects, i.e. "Optimisation of the Maillard reaction. A way to improve quality and safety of thermally processed food" and "Optimised processes for preparing healthy and added value food ingredients from lupin kernels, the European protein-rich grain legume". She has been the vice-president of the European Association on Grain Legumes (AEP) in the period 2004-2007 and she is one of founders of the academic spin-off HPF-Nutraceutics which develops new nutraceuticals from legumes.


Prof. Dr. Guy De Backer, Ghent University, Belgium  

Guy De Backer is professor and head of the Department Public Health at the University of Ghent. He is cardiologist and epidemiologist. He was one of the main researchers of the first Belgian Food Consumption Survey. He is the chair of the Superior Health Council in Belgium.


Prof. Dr. Nathalie Delzenne, l'Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium (chair)  

Nathalie Delzenne is professor in Nutrition and Biochemistry, and is the leader of the research group in Experimental Nutrition in the Unit of Pharmacokinetics, Metabolism, Nutrition and Toxicology of the Université catholique de Louvain.
She is involved in international projects and scientific committees (including International Life Sciences Institute) , and is an editor and reviewer for several international journals (Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care, British Journal of Nutrition…).
She is also a member of the Scientific Board of the European Academy of Nutritional Science.

Prof. Dr. Helmut Heseker, University of Paderborn, Germany

1975-1980: Studies of human nutrition (diploma) at the University of Giessen (Germany) 1980-1985: PhD training Institute of Nutrition, University Giessen.
1985-1993: Scientific co-worker at the Institute of Nutrition, University Giessen
1993-1996: Substitute professorship at the University of Paderborn
1996-1997: Scientific director at the Federal Institute for Health Protection of Consumers and Veterinary Medicine (BgVV) in Berlin in the Department of Nutritional Medicine.
Since 1997: Professor in Human Nutrition (full-ship) at the University of Paderborn, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Consumer 2007: Visiting professor at Jean Mayer HNRCA at Tufts University Boston. Research interests: nutritional epidemiology; nutrition and health situation in population groups; nutrition and health education; vitamins and bioactive plant substances.


Prof. Dr. Sander Kersten, Wageningen University, The Netherlands

Sander Kersten is an associate Professor within the Division of Human Nutrition at Wageningen University, the Netherlands. He received his MSc degree in Human Nutrition at Wageningen University in 1993. He subsequently moved to the USA and obtained his PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from Cornell University in 1997. Following a postdoctoral period in the laboratory of Dr. Walter Wahli at the University of Lausanne he moved back to Wageningen in 2000 to set up a new research group in Nutrigenomics, together with the newly appointed chair Dr. Michael Muller. Dr. Kersten is also Adjunct Associate Professor in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University.


Prof. Dr. Ian Rowland, University of Reading, UK

Ian Rowland has a BSc and PhD in microbiology from University College London and is a Registered Nutritionist. For 10 years he was Professor of Human Nutrition at the University of Ulster before moving last year to his present position as head of the Hugh Sinclair Unit of Nutrition at the University of Reading. His current research areas include the role of diet (in particular probiotics, prebiotics, phytoestrogens, and phytochemicals) in prevention of colon, breast and prostate cancer. He was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Ghent for his work on nutrition and cancer risk.


Prof. Dr. Cesare Sirtori, University of Milano, Italy 

Cesare Sirtori is Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Milano and from 2206 is the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy. He also Director of the University Center for Dyslipidemias at City Hospital of Niguarda that has followed more than 20,000 patients with lipid disorders/arterial disease in the past 36 years. Professor Sirtori is the author of over 500 scientific articles, more than 300 of which on highly ranked medico-biological journals, as well as of several books in the field of atherosclerosis, clinical pharmacology, nutrition and others.


Prof. Dr. Greet Vansant, University of Leuven, Belgium 

Greet Vansant is Professor of Nutrition and Health within the Department of Public health, Faculty of Medicine, Catholic University Leuven. Main research topics are obesity, lipids, cancer, public health concerns, physical activity and prevention. She is author and/or co-author of more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. She was speaker at several national and international congresses and symposia. She is member of several advisory boards, eg. Superior Health Council Belgium, Nutrients Belgium (Nubel) and expert within working groups at the European level. 


Prof. Dr. Kurt Widhalm, University of Vienna, Austria

Kurt Widhalm is the President of the European Childhood Obesity Group since 2003. At the Medical University Vienna he is Professor for Clinical Nutrition and Head of Department for Nutrition and Metabolism. He is also head of the Academy of Clinical Nutrition at the Austrian Nutrition Society and of the Physicians Board of Vienna. Professor Kurt Widhalm obtained his degree of Medical doctor in 1971 at the university of Vienna.
Academic Career:

1978 Senior Lecturer in Pediatrics;
1980 Assoc. Prof. of Pediatrics;
1986 Professor for Pediatrics,

2003 Full Professor for Clinical Nutrition and Head of Dept. of Nutrition and Metabolism, President of European Childhood Obesity Group.
